CalTrain

• I took the CalTrain home from work. I've been meaning to try this for years. The San Francisco 22nd Street location is a mile from my house. The Palo Alto California Street station is a mile from work. Figure two 10-minute bike rides, plus 41 minutes on the express train (non-commute-hour trains take 55 minutes). It's always seemed easier to drive - home and work are both near the freeway. However, driving the same stretch of freeway every day...

• On the CalTrain, you line up with the other cyclists for the bike car. Bikes are stacked according to destination. It is necessary to tag your bike, just like checking luggage on a plane. The whole process is so easy and convenient. One could read a book, take a nap, check email...

• My Grandpa Steve used to do this same commute, in reverse. The train had a different name, but followed the same route. Grandpa caught the train in San Mateo to travel to his engineering job in San Francisco. He worked in a building at 18th and Florida, the same neighborhood where I now live. His building now houses the Pottery Barn offices.

• The CalTrain even connects to the BART train - the two lines share a station in Millbrae.
