surrounded by ghosts

• Tahoe is all about ghost stories. Anyone who has spent any time here either has had an experience, or knows someone with a tale to tell.

• We went to the CalNeva casino & Hotel to take the "tunnel" tour. It was part California history, part ghost hunt, part celebrity gossip. The place is still in operation - you can sleep in Sinatra's room (cabin #5) and there are kids swimming in the California/Nevada pool. Overall, it's sadly threadbare. I was expecting kitsch, but Cal Neva is like an elderly person's once-grand home. Although I did win a free drink ticket by answering one of the tour guide's celebrity trivia questions.

• Here we are in the "Indian" room, on the state border:

• Sinatra was hanging out at Cal Neva for a long time before he owned it. Here's his wet cement inscription inside the tunnel ("A.G." for Ava Gardner):

• On July 6th, it was 84 degrees, and suddenly lightening and thunder happened. And then rain started pounding. I love the sudden dramatic weather changes. This is the lake right before the rain:

• on the 4th of July, rushing to the beach as dusk fell, I left my phone in the car, so no fireworks photos, which is sad because the fireworks were really good this year.

• my wife's aunt remarked at my increasing amount of gray hair, as we walked toward a pool with 5 kids. This was inside the gated community where my wife's aunt and uncle rent a condo each year. We visit them, eat food, and use the pool.

• Here's the view from the amazing pool toward the lake:

I didn't know that Tahoe was haunted, but, then, I've never been there. Ghosts are everywhere, I guess, but I wonder about the nature of those around casinos, and are there more of them there than in other settings?
